The upcoming Founder’s Day celebration was the subject of the Monday night meeting of the Parent Teacher Student Association at the Albany High School library.

The honorees receiving the Honorary Life Award are Robert Smeallie, a foreign language teacher, club advisor and the Department Chair of World Languages; and Stephanie Garcia-Galagarza, an ESL teacher, and the Building Curriculum Team Leader. The honorees will each receive a gift basket  from the association on April 24 containing bottles of wine and gift cards to local places in the Albany area.

“Founder’s Day honors people in the school district who have gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to serving the students,” said Joellen Gardner, secretary of the Parent Teacher group.

The 2015 Founders Day Cocktail Reception will take place Friday, April 24th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 257 Washington Ave Extension in Albany. The Founders Day cocktail reception will feature musical performances and artwork by Albany students.

The organization is looking for parents of Albany High students to make reservations for the event. Tickets, which start at $35, include hors d’oeurves, pasta, carving, dessert stations and a DJ. Those who do not have a ticket will not be admitted. Christina Wiley, president of the association, said the group is strict on RSVP’s and once capacity is reached they will not allow anyone else inside.

The association pays in advance for the event and they usually gets reimbursed from the proceeds from ticket sales to parents, said Charles Parmalee, treasurer of the organization. Last year, Parmalee said the the parent teacher group wrote a check for $665 for the reservation. Reservations for the 2015 Founders Day are due this week.

The association is  looking for those involved at Albany High to reach out to others and try to get as many people to attend Founder’s Day as possible. Students and teachers at Albany High will hear about the event during morning announcements.

A silent auction to benefit a scholarship Fund for Albany High School seniors will be held on Founder’s Day. The high school will also sponsor its only fundraiser of the year, a 50/50 raffle, which will be run that evening by Wiley and Gardner.

Anyone interested in attending can contact the Albany High Parent Teacher Association at PTSaAlbanyHigh@gmail.com.

“You see a bunch of teachers and the format is really friendly,” said Dale Getto, the temporary principal at Albany High School, while principal Cecily L. Wilson Turner goes on maternity leave in May, “It’s fun.”  -30-
