Sidewalk Sale on Madison

October 17, 2014

by Amy Bishop

A sidewalk sale sponsored by the Upper Madison Improvement Group will take place on Madison Avenue between West Lawrence Street and South Main Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday. The event is open to the public.

This is the first time a sale of this kind will be held by this organization. Sellers each pay a $10 fee to rent a table and chairs and may sell whatever they like. Anything from original art to used clothing will be available.

Reesa Guarino, a state worker, plans to sell household items including clothing, books, and kitchenware. The prices of the items are not decided yet.

“My expectation for the event is to make a little cash, re-purpose some goods, donate what doesn’t sell and clear out my house of unneeded items,” said Guarino.

Marilyn Douglas is the Co-Chair of The Upper Madison Improvement Group, formerly the Beautify Upper Madison Project, organized in 2011. Douglas is organizing this event along with Virginia Hammer, the other co-chair.

“If it’s successful, we’ll do something similar next June to the end of July – probably every other week and try different events,” said Douglas. “One time a sidewalk sale, then maybe a plant sale, one time just used books, then maybe display some art.”

A few members of the Improvement Group, including Douglas and Hammer, plan to donate any of the money generated from the event to invest in  flower and plant containers along Madison Avenue from South Main to South Allen.

“We want to add more planters; and continue lining the area with Upper Madison banners,” said Douglas. “We also want to help some of the smaller business with signage and improvements to their facades.”

“Our major goal is to promote, celebrate, and beautify Upper Madison,” said Douglas, “city living at its best.”
