Led by team captain Malcolm Bickley’s two home runs, the Albany Falcons defeated the Bishop Maginn Griffins in a Big Ten Conference Game win Wednesday at Bleecker Stadium. The final score was 12-2.

The varsity baseball game started off with sunny skies and a one run lead for Bishop Maginn. Things quickly changed, however, into the second inning as the Albany Falcons didn’t even let the Bishop Maginn Griffins reach a base before quickly striking them out.

With Bishop Maginn still leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Albany scored two runs thanks to a throwing error and player Alec Carman’s initiative to steal second base and then advance on a passed ball. Two strike outs and a pick off on first base on an attempt to steal put Bishop Maginn up to bat again, with Albany leading 2-1.

Bishop Maginn’s John Sica hit a single and then stole second, but didn’t advance any further after the next batter softly lined out to Bickley, who made a sliding play to get the third out of the inning.

With the advancement of the game, however, came the reminder of an impending rainstorm. Dark clouds moved to block out the once bright and hot sun as Albany continued to lead, at the bottom of the third inning with the score still 2-1.

Rain cancellations this season had folks concerned about further schedule changes. The mother of Maginn’s pitcher, Mitchell Landers contemplated both the weather and the competition at the game.  “Albany’s got a good team this season,” said Bea Landers.

The bottom of the third brought Albany two more runs including a solo home run to left field by Bickley. Also, Steven Zimring hit into the outfield sending Kyle Rafferty home.

Albany pitcher Kenan Worden struck out three in a row in the top of the fourth inning. Albany also struck out quickly in the second half of the inning, but not before a home run by Joe Bonariggo.

The score was 5-1 with Albany leading, Bishop Maginn headed up to bat but didn’t score in the inning. Albany left the bases loaded at the end of the inning.

The sixth inning saw more of Albany’s Bickley, and also Bryan Carr, who both doubled, sending Bickley home for another home run. Albany loaded the bases again and then Mark Bureley tripled to score Albany another three runs.

With the score 11-1, Bishop Maginn scored a run in the 7th inning but got their third out when Albany’s Bickley caught a grounder to second base, ending the game just as it started to rain.

“Hands down, #3 was the best player in this game,” fan Robert Patrick said of Bickley’s performance. -30-
